    What it is

    Moving for a healthcare job moves your whole family. A partner, children and a new baby each have their own rules. They cover what a partner’s visa allows, the support your job extends to your family, which health funds your family can join and what a baby born here is entitled to.

    Money for couples

    Leave, super and payments for couples and parents.

    Some rules apply only to couples and parents: paying into a partner’s super, sharing contributions, and the parental leave and flexible work in your agreement.

    Super for couples

    Couples

    • Paying up to $3,000 into a partner’s super can earn you a tax offset of up to $540. You get it in full if their income is $37,000 or less, and none from $40,000.
    • You can move up to 85% of a year’s concessional contributions into a partner’s super, if they are under their preservation age, or under 65 and not retired.

    Parental leave and flexible work

    From your agreement and the Fair Work Act

    • NSW public sector, NSW Health included: 14 weeks paid for each parent, and 2 more each if both take at least 12.
    • Victorian public nurses and midwives: 14 weeks paid for the primary carer and 2 for the other parent, from the first day of work.
    • Queensland Health nurses and midwives: 14 weeks paid, or 28 at half pay.
    • A parent of a child of school age or younger can ask for flexible work. The employer answers in writing within 21 days, and can refuse only on reasonable business grounds.
    • Full-time staff get 10 days of paid sick and carer’s leave a year. Everyone, casuals included, gets 2 days of unpaid carer’s leave.
