A partner who came on your visa has their own conditions. A baby born here has its own status. Home Affairs sets both, not your job.
A partner on your visa
Work, study, Medicare and registration
- Your partner’s visa sets whether and how they can work and study. VEVO, the Home Affairs online check, shows their conditions.
- Family joining you later apply to join your visa as subsequent entrants.
- Medicare: a partner who lived in the UK before arriving enrols under the reciprocal agreement. Irish residents get public hospital care only, without a card.
- A partner who is also a health professional may have a faster route to registration. See Registration from overseas in Credentials.
- Family Tax Benefit: the 482 is not on the list of eligible temporary visas. New residents wait a year for Part A.

A baby born here
Citizenship and your visa
- A child born in Australia is a citizen only if a parent is an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the birth.
- A child born here who lives here for 10 years becomes a citizen on their 10th birthday.
- Home Affairs has a form for telling it about a newborn on a 482 or similar visa.
- We keep the birth certificate, the visa grant and the Medicare card together, with their dates.
